Best Frequent Flyer Programme

I leave California for college in my hometown in Massachusetts, and want to subscribe to a loyalty program of an airline. which is better? I hear Jet Blue is a scam.
I want something that does not expire after one year.
something that does not cost me money in excess.

I am a frequent flyer account for both United and Delta. United have made changes to their policies and miles will now expire 18 months instead of 36.
