Secure Payment Transactions

I met this person and I plan to buy something worth $ 1,000 from him. I do not really know this person and I'm afraid im going to rip off if I just paid over paypal. (As they dont ship it or it is broken, etc.)

Is there a trick to secure the payment process (paypal perhaps?) I can use other than ebay? I do not use eBay because it costs a lot of expense, it is sold.

Use an escrow service. Do a search and find a good reputation. They need information about them on eBay in the Help section.
