Ventless Gas Logs

Posted on March 21, 2010.
Ventless Gas LogsWhat is the difference between the vent and ventless gas logs?

I have a wood fireplace and want to have gas logs installed. Any advice on whether or vented gas logs ventless are better in terms of price, maintenance, look, etc.?

There are reasons to take both, it depends who are important to you.

Positive aspects of vented gas logs:

Extremely realistic flame pattern that looks like a wood fire.
The flame is much larger than vent-free logs
dancing flames and rolled around like real wood logs.
Does not require a carbon monoxide (CO)
Since the damper is open, most odors go up the chimney

Negative aspects of vented gas logs:

Less heat without evacuation of balls (probably will not heat your room)
Uses of gas a little more wind without newspapers

Positive aspects of vent-free gas logs:

Many out more heat than vented gas logs
Less pollution
A little less gas consumption

Negative Aspects of Wind-Frees Gas Activity:

Since the byproduct of gas combustion is water itself, vent-free logs present the excess moisture in your home that can lead to mold.
Be careful not to burn your vent-free logs for long periods of time with the windows closed, otherwise they deplete the oxygen in your home.
If you burn your logs without evacuation of more than an hour or two, you have to crack open a window to let air in your home to replace the oxygen burned by the gas vent-free logs. This will introduce cold air into the room and offset some of the benefits of heating vent-free newspapers claim to have.
vent-free gas logs produce an odor that many people equate the smell of kerosene. So if you have a sensitive nose, you may not be able to handle the smell and will be very unhappy with vent-free logs. On the other hand, we have heard people who love the smell because it reminds them of their childhood in the house of the grandmother.
Wind without newspapers are not legal in California and some cities and municipalities. Please check your local laws. Please note that it is not illegal to use vent-free log sets if they are used with the vent open.
logs vent-free gas are required to have an ODS system (oxygen depletion) and a carbon monoxide (CO).
The flame pattern with vent without newspapers pails in comparison with vent newspapers. Because the gas is clean burning, the flame height is very low and most is blue. In addition, you will find that the flame does not dance around like a real wood fire and very little of the flame actually touch the newspapers. The reason is that when the flame touches the newspapers, it is cooled and does not burn properly and begins to produce soot and exhaust gases.
